How to Update Audience Criteria on an Active Journey

Learn how to update audience criteria on an active Journey by creating a new audience list, rebuilding your Journey workflow, and safely stopping the active flow.

When a Journey status is Running in the Orbee platform, direct edits to the attached audience filters are restricted to prevent unintended contact re-enrollments. Because Journeys cannot currently be cloned or re-enabled once stopped, updating audience criteria requires creating a new audience list, setting appropriate transition filters, building a new Journey workflow, clicking Start Journey, and clicking Stop Journey on the original flow.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Create a New Audience with Transition Filters

  • Navigate to Data (Shoppers) > Audience > Lists in the left navigation menu.
  • Locate the audience list attached to your Running Journey, click the three-dots menu on the far right of the row, and select Start New Audience from This.
  • Click Filters on the configuration screen to adjust your core criteria (e.g., expanding Sold Date from 60 days ago to 100 days ago).
  • Transition Guardrail for Relative Date Ranges: If your audience uses relative date filters, add an explicit date filter (such as Sold Date > [Cutoff Date]) to prevent contacts who previously entered or completed the original Journey from re-qualifying.
  • Click Create Audience and save it with a distinct name (e.g., [Audience Name] - V2).

Step 2: Build and Start the New Journey

  • Navigate to Marketing > Email > Journeys in the left navigation menu.
  • Click Create Journey in the top right corner.
  • Rebuild the original Journey steps, including communication elements, delays, and branching logic.
  • Set the entry trigger node to point to your newly created audience ([Audience Name] - V2).
  • Save the Journey (it will appear in Draft status).
  • In the Journeys table, locate your Draft Journey and click the green Start Journey button under the Actions column.

Step 3: Stop the Original Journey

  • In the Journeys table, locate the original workflow with status Running.
  • Click the red Stop Journey button under the Actions column.

Best Practices & Platform Considerations

  • Stopped Journeys Cannot Be Re-Enabled: Clicking Stop Journey is permanent; a stopped Journey cannot be edited or restarted. Always click Start Journey on your new workflow before stopping the original to avoid gaps in execution.
  • Prevent Unintended Contact Re-Enrollment: Adding explicit cutoff logic (e.g., Date > [Cutoff Date]) on relative-date audiences ensures expanding a lookback window captures only newly eligible contacts rather than re-enrolling members who already completed the flow.
  • Maintain Analytics Boundaries: Creating a new Journey ensures reporting performance remains clean and separated before and after the criteria update.
